My idea of “INDEPENDENCE”

This article was my first blog… I was scribbling my pen as to what would be my first blog…Will it be about elaborating my few experiences about life? or an opinionated talk on some current social issue...well, it's easy to write about something but fairly difficult to decide the topic. Finally, one day the cultural sec of our hostel asked me if I was interested to perform something on the eve of Independence Day.. surely I am neither a vocalist nor an artist, so she suggested me for the speech. Well, I love to be an orator.. but couldn’t get a chance ever to do so.. Somehow I gave her the affirmation that too in a hectic schedule … maybe because I didn't want to miss the first opportunity of my life.!!!

I was excited to write something. Had some preconceived ideas that would write about our historic past... remembering our martyrs.. saluting their courage and the battle of 100 years to be an independent nation… But the moment I started to go for it somewhere my conscience knocked me by saying, “Was this the context I was willing to convey ?”…surely not.. and finally I ended up with the write-up below!

Today we have gathered here to mark the celebration of our 70th Independence Day. A question which has kept on creeping in my mind on the event of these national festivals is that, ‘What is our idea of celebrating these historic dates’? Is it confined to just singing the national anthem twice a year ? Or simply reciting a few patriotic songs and anecdotes to feel the spirit of patriotism on these days. Well, I beg your pardon if I sound too sarcastic. But what I want to emphasize is to feel the spirit of patriotism by providing our little services towards our nation throughout the year, rather than feeling it at one single day.

We might not just by sitting in this arena realize the worth of the independence given to us by our forefathers but can surely feel its value by visualizing a bird kept in a cage, who is desperate to fly in the sky once she is freed from the cage. She wants to explore her idea of zenith, her innate expertise in flying, and finally fulfill her dream to make a nest of her own.

So if a tiny bird can aspire for plenty of goals after being independent, we being mighty human beings should be more desperate enough for utilizing our potential to the utmost possible.

Another question which eventually strikes my mind is how do we provide our service to the nation by being a student? Unknowingly, I somehow recalled our hon’ble Director Sir’s speech on our Research Scholar Day, during which he told that a poor man who buys one single match stick, even contributes to our stipend by paying the tax levied on it. In turn, if we perform our research and TA duty just as a part of the curriculum with dishonesty, then it would be surely injustice towards our society, exactly in the same way when we ourselves sometimes blame the government for zero development on the cost of huge taxes.

So finally I would end up by saying let's not waste our potential on trivial issues and destructive criticisms or ill–will and blaming others. Let's not take even this independence for granted and instead strive to work throughout our lives in such a way so as to give a helping hand to make not only our lives but also our country a prosperous nation.
